But he has to do something. Who else is there?

Critique: With plot points that could be taken from contemporary newspaper headlines, "Wandering West" is a deftly scripted contemporary novel that documents author Gary C. Stalcup as a master wordsmith and a skilled novelist. A riveting and entertaining read from beginning to end, "Wandering West" is highly recommended for personal reading lists and community library Contemporary Fiction collections.
In Stalcup’s debut novel, an aging, disgraced New York trader (Jack Stiler) starts over as a ranch owner in rural Texas. …Though at first reluctant about the dramatic change, 64-year-old Jack has settled into a new identity as a kindhearted employer and local luminary who uses his investing skills to help fund the ranch amid a landmark drought. But the recent dry spell is perhaps the least of Jack’s concerns …Jack’s misfortunes intensify, calcifying into a surprisingly enthralling, if at times overwhelming, account of one unlucky guy…But such a complaint is nearly inconsequential in light of the constant thrills that keep the pages turning. And that’s saying nothing of Stalcup’s deep-seated empathy, convincing dialogue and metered prose that evoke the work of Kent Haruf and Pete Dexter. An ambitious, sincere novel that weighs the meaning of family and success.
What a treat and delight to discover that Gary Stalcup CAN write! Have known him for years but to my delight discovered he loves writing and is an accomplished author! Where Shadows Loom was absolutely written beautifully, his characters were frighteningly realistic, the story line quick paced and intense! I could not wait to discover what the outcome was (who won and why?). When an author captures the essence of an individual in such a way that you can actually see the characters as he portrays them, it is indeed a talent worth watching! I do indeed foresee that the talent he has hidden in the depths of his thoughts will be one well worth watching! As I write, I can still see many of the scenes within the story line! Don't miss this great read!! Thanks Gary for sharing such a wonderful novel!

Where Shadows Loom is truly a thriller! The book is set in a small Texas town that has more than its share of good and evil. It is a vivid picture of what can happen when seemingly upright citizens lose their way and greed takes over, which represents the evil. There is a broken down ex-football player who represents the good, but can he be the hero? Mr. Stalcup has a wonderful way with words that paints a colorful picture, warts and all! A page-turner to be sure.

Great Book! I am not one to normally give book reviews, but Mr. Stalcup had me hooked by the end of the 4th chapter. Read the final 14 chapters in one day, as I could not walk away from this story. Having been born and raised on the southern edge of what is now most famously know as the Eagle Ford Shale area of South Texas, the descriptions of the rugged terrain the characters must deal with in addition to their personal struggles is as accurate as any I have previously read about this area of Texas. The story line took me through a range of emotions from concern to sympathy to anger, and finally to a craving for 19th century South Texas justice. A great read for the those of us who just enjoy sitting down with a book that keeps us emotionally involved with the characters until the very end.

I really enjoyed this book. The setting is South Texas and during the Eagle Ford Shale oil boom. This made the book especially interesting since I live in S Texas. This book shows how greed can take a person in directions that they would never imagine that they would go and to what measures one would take to stay out of trouble or to cover their tracks. I found this book to be very interesting and look forward to reading Mr. Stalcup's other book, Wandering West.

I had chosen a new book to read when my husband began to rave about this book. That's when I decided to read Where Shadows Loom. I am so glad that I made that choice. He was right, I could not put it down.

This book is excellent. I was hooked from the beginning and it kept me wanting more. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes a well written book.

I falsely thought this was going to be a book in the western genre. I was mistaken. It is a good read, includes and addresses many of the modern issues, and I couldn't put it down. I'm a fast reader, but found myself purposely slowing my reading down to enjoy the words, it's so well written. Well, actually, I had to put it down for a few hours. You see, we were on a boat on the open ocean, making a crossing between islands. As soon as we entered the reef barrier, I had to find out what happened next, I had only 5 chapters to go, and there were lots of things happening. So, while I was trying not to be seasick, my imagination and thoughts were all about that book, and what would happen next. I hear he has a new book coming out, soon. Will be buying that one as soon as it's available.

I loved this book. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I found it fast paced and easy to read. The book is set in south Texas and anyone familiar with that rugged country will find the descriptions true to life. The main characters are believable and sympathetic. I was sorry to see the book end and I look forward to reading other books by Mr. Stalcup, hopefully, a sequel to this one.

It has been a very long time since I purchased a book that was so good that I had a hard time putting it down. This book addresses many of the challenges that we can all identify with in our own personal lives and the struggles that we see many of our friends and family go through. The setting of the story could be found in almost any era of our American history or in present day events. The main character, Jack Stiler, is an example of a man who desperately needs to leave his current life and return where he now knows he has always belonged. I hope to see other books coming from this author

I dug this book! It was nearly impossible to put down each time i dove into it. A window into the rugged terrain and daily struggles of life in a rural Texas border-town. I'm a sucker for a good western, so anything set in the wild west or rugged terrain will pique my interest. This one definitely fit the bill with gunfights, rattlesnakes and dusty trails. You can pretty much feel the Texas heat when you read it. The protagonist, Jack Stiler, is constantly thrust into complex situations which keeps the pages flying from one to the next. Unfortunately, it ended and what I realized about Jack's story is that it's not a western after all, but a modern-day tale of a man with much of the same struggles (internal and external) you or I might have. I found it was easy to identify with him and feel his emotions. To me, the inward-focused character development of Jack Stiler is what makes this story so riveting. It checked all my boxes and I can't wait to read Gary Stalcup's next release.

Good read! I grew up in South Texas and this book made me feel like I was there. While I was on the edge of my seat for some of the story, other parts had me laughing out loud. Great character development too.

Mr. Stalcup hit the nail on the head with his book Wandering West. He captures many experiences I have had living in South Texas for over 70 years. I too have worked with cattle and horses, shot rifles and pistols and know how and when to use them. I have lived the ranch life. Thank Stalcup, for an exciting and true story of timeless brush adventures.

Good question. I don’t really have a good answer, just the ‘write’ one. (Sorry, I inherited a propensity for making puns from my dad.) Actually, writing can be a royal pain in the butt. Excruciatingly so sometimes. To be honest with you, I dread the thought of it, until an idea strikes me the way a chair rocking over an outstretched tail enlivens a slumbering cat. It gets me moving, if you will. But if writing creates such an emotional upheaval, why do it? Are you…...
